Let’s just store and pass this around as a CSV is one of the mistakes that I made in my career. At some point though you too will probably deal with CSV files since they are easy to create and everyone thinks they know how to work with them. After all you can open them in anything and basically anyone can see the data. Let’s talk about 3 of the pitfalls and I’ll give you a couple of ideas on how to work around them. ❇️ They have no defined schema. Best case you have a header but it’s not like any of those columns are not null let alone have a data type defined for them. ❇️ Parsing isn’t straight forward. How to handle escape characters and other issues isn’t always clear. Different parsers handle it differently. ❇️ Trying to have a complex structure in a CSV file is a mess. Most of the time with complex structures I’d challenge the data modeling work that has been done but frequently that can’t be helped with source systems and sometimes it’s just necessary. My main recommendation here is to avoid CSV and other unstructured data whenever possible. This means if you are receiving it the first step is to convert to something with more structure. However, since at some point you’ll be forced to work with it, make sure your testing is thorough and the data contract is as well defined as it can be. I often see upper management talk about the productivity of a single individual. And I have met quite a few individuals who were both extremely productive and really nice and helpful people when working with others. But management rarely considers what productivity is lost on their team when the brilliant individual brings down everybody else around them.

Copilot not only creates images wholesale (à la DAL-E and Midjourney) but also interprets rough sketches, transforming them into professional-quality visuals. It’s like having an artistic collaborator right at my fingertips. 🎮 Gaming Notes While it’s not a dedicated gaming laptop, my Surface Laptop 7 surprises me. It handles relaxing strategy games like Old World and Rimworld admirably. No Man Sky? Decent performance, even on lower settings. But for serious gaming, Xbox Cloud gaming steals the show. I played Starfield via cloud streaming—it worked seamlessly, even on a non-gaming laptop. 💡 Beyond the Hardware The laptop itself is sleek, responsive, and meticulously designed. While hardware matters, it’s the chips and software that truly differentiate. And let’s talk battery life—miles ahead of any Intel-based laptop! 🌟 Embracing the Future As I incorporate AI features into my daily workflows, I’m excited about the impact it’ll have. I've taken some time lately to dig into some developer productivity tools that have long been on my list.  One of them, "Commitizen" has been featured in Hashiconf talks several times.  In "Getting started with Commitizen" I take us for a full tour of setting it up and using it.  While it's not perfect, there are some definite advantages in helping properly set up commit messages... but I do cover why ultimately I won't continue with it. In "Webcheck, Enclosed and Medama", I cover Webcheck, which is a great containerized tool for diving deep into a website - from SSL checks to security vulnerabilities.  Webcheck covers quite a lot of areas (moreso when tied to a GCP API token).  Medama, in a similar vein, is a website visitor tracker you self-host.  It's a good option when seeking open-source and self-hosted.  Lastly, the favourite of the bunch, Enclosed is an excellent secret sharing open-source tool I plan to keep in my cluster.  I set it up locally, then in Kubernetes and show various usages of it.  Excellent option for sharing some private notes or secrets. - "Tools: Webcheck, Enclosed and Medama" : https://lnkd.in/gHMRPkdr - "Getting started with Commitizen": https://lnkd.in/gkziTe8j #Commitizen #Webcheck #Enclosed #Medama #OpenSource #Kubernetes #Docker

Recently, there’s been a surge in individuals offering programming courses and lessons, many of them promising high salaries and a direct path to success. As someone who has been in the industry for years, I want to talk about the reality behind these promises and offer a more realistic perspective for those considering entering this fascinating, but also challenging, world. It’s undeniable that the tech sector can offer excellent salaries, but tying the motivation to learn programming solely to money is a mistake. Many courses and ads give the impression that learning to code guarantees a high salary regardless of context, and this simply isn’t true. Programming salaries depend on many factors, such as the specific role, location, prior experience, and the type of company you work for. Entering the world of software development motivated only by money can lead to frustration and, in many cases, burnout. Learning to code takes time, patience, and constant skill development. Those looking for quick and easy results based on unrealistic promises often end up feeling disappointed. One thing many of these courses overlook is the importance of soft skills. Success in a programming career doesn’t just depend on how many programming languages you master or how proficient you are with the latest framework. Factors like communication, teamwork, project management, and adaptability to changing environments are equally vital to achieving a successful and sustainable career. It’s important to understand that not all tech jobs are the same. Working at a startup, for example, is very different from working at a large corporation. The type of role (frontend, backend, fullstack engineer, DevOps, etc.) also significantly affects growth opportunities, daily responsibilities, and, of course, salaries. Programming is an exciting career full of possibilities, but it’s important to enter with your eyes wide open and expectations aligned with reality. If you’re considering learning to code, do it for the right reasons: curiosity, the desire to solve problems, and a passion for creating. High salaries and opportunities will come, but only when they’re backed by solid skills and the right mindset.
